Silicon Alley - Newcastle's Urban Televillage

The Televillage Brief

The Silicon Alley project has several objectives, including:

  • regenerating a run down part of the centre of Newcastle within the city's Grainger Town area;
  • creating a sustainable Urban Televillage, with a mix of home-working (part residential, part business) and purely business premises, where people can live and work in the heart of the city;
  • emphasising, encouraging and attracting businesses based on information and communications technology and multimedia disciplines;
  • promoting the growth of a community of diverse but related businesses which can work together in evolving partnerships;
  • providing affordable office space, in a city-centre location, with excellent facilities;
  • integrating fast broadband Internet and internal networking facilities;
  • addressing concerns over the local environment and improving the amenities and aspect of the location.

7-15 Pink lane, the old Turners building, is now Northumbrian Water House - one of Silicon Alley's prestigious new buildings.

North East Workspace has a track record of creating workable solutions to the problems inherent in the redevelopment of redundant buildings into practical and desirable accommodation for small businesses. This experience has been brought to bear on the Urban Televillage project. See "The Developer" for more information.
