IntroductionThe Site has a complex history spanning several hundred years. For years, the area was a garden for high-class residential property on Westgate Road. As the city developed, the usage of the site changed and it played host to the Angus Coach Works - makers of horse-drawn carriages. |
The site was prominent in the fifties as the base of the Turner's chemists / photographic chain and commercial film making business. However, as the area ran down, it gained notoriety as Newcastle's red light district. The area is now being regenerated, as part of PNE's development strategy, within the Grainger Town initiative. |
